The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) organisation has signed a deal with Amazon to sell its low cost laptops.

The One Laptop Per Child is a scheme and the brainchild of Professor Nicholas Negroponte.

The idea is to produce , package a low cost/high spec laptop to developing countries to reach out to school children in under priviliged areas.

The XO-2 laptop does not use a keyboard as such, instead it has two screens where one can be converted to a touch screen keyboard(I imagine to help prevent dust, grit etc and to keep maintenance down!! ) .
It can be powered by a pull cord(wind up radio type technology) and is preloaded with educational applications/softwares and WIFI.
I am not sure which OS it will ship with, but I would have thought Linux would be a great choice as it's well reputed for being excellent on lower spec systems and will also help to keep production costs down instead of lining the fat cats pockets, after all- this is a charity type scheme where no one should profit except for the intended(school children).

The scheme works by someone buying a XO for their own use and thus donating another one to a schoolchild in a developing country.

The laptops are hoping to be available for just under $100.00 ,maybe even lower down to $80.00.
